COLOR + MATERIAL
DIRECTION
Below is a sampling of color + material trend direction I have done across various brands.
During my tenure at KEEN Footwear, I was able to work on seasonal color and material trend direction. Building in the heritage space of the outdoors while exploring the intersection with fashion, the color stories were made to appeal to the wide range of KEEN "fans". The first example shown here is the story "Outside In". The goal was to capture the spirit of bringing the outside in and be inspired by our own backyard - connecting our consumers to the nature around us through deep, natural tones with pops of safety orange and a sunshine yellow. Materials were selected to mimic nature in texture, nod to heritage outdoor, or lend sustainable fibers to the product. Showcasing the color and material story are the two colorways of the Smokey Bear x KEEN collection. The “S’mores” colorway brings in a Desert Sand and Ivory print paired with a light gum rubber colored outsole. The Olive colorway has a tonal Sage and Olive Drab print that gives the custom Smokey Bear toggle in Hot Orange a nice pop on the shoe. Both colorways have the same material mapping of a neoprene upper with recycled polyster webbing cage.
“Digital Intersections” is a Spring/Summer story about the not-always-bad clashing of nature and technology. Incorporating fresher, brighter colors with bolder prints - this trend board pushes technical, performance materials to be made playful. This board was primarily inspired by the trends of the younger KEEN consumers who enjoy time outdoors, but who also have a large digital presence.
Above are the Spring/Summer 2025 digital and physical color and material trend directions for the adidas Skate and Energy (now known as "Culture Collaborations, and Partnerships") Teams. Themes were 'cool metal', 'suede innovation', 'textural brights', and 'translucent functionality'.
